A Correlation between applicative marker types and word order patterns: Diachronic perspective

Abstract

To date, applicative marker types have not been paid enough attention compared to other parameters yielding the diversity of applicative constructions within and across languages. This study, through analysis of sample 50 languages with applicative markers, revealed that there is a correlation between applicative marker types and word order patterns whereby applicative prefixes generally cooccur with predominant OV constituent order and postpositions (or case suffixes) whereas applicative suffixes cooccur with both word order patterns to similar extents. Then, it offered diachronic explanation to it by discussing with examples the following facts. First, applicative prefixes and applicative suffixes often develop from postpositions and prepositions respectively. Second, applicative suffixes can develop from second or final verbs (‘give’ in many cases) in serial verb constructions. Its implication for known correlations concerning word order patterns is also suggested.
