Abstract
The present article discusses the role of stress in the correptio iambica, in order to reiterate the exceptionality of the shortening in the case of stressed syllables in any position within the word, while also confirming the linguistic nature of the phenomenon. Overall, this study argues against the theses that consider the correptio a meter-related license or a convention of theatrical language.
