Iunctura nei testi grammaticali medievali: percorsi di metalinguaggio sintattico

The article deals with a terminological study on the grammatical syntactical field in the medieval period. In the analysis of the parts of the speech functionally dedicated to studies on the so-called submerged syntax, the term coniunctio plays a very important role. However, in the examination of this terminology, we come across two terms that simultaneously share, exchange and divide different areas of use over time and among the various authors: besides coniunctio we find the root-related iunctura. For the purposes of this study, the occurrences of iunctura were collected, specifically analyzed in a contrasting way with those of constructio and other terms in the course of their attestations. These terms relating to the use and description of the conjunction, but also of the formation of the syllable as well as of the syntagms, analyzed in different periods, allow us to reconstruct an internal story that follows both a chronological sense and a logical sense in the discussion of the historyof grammatical concepts.

On āmreḍitas in Sanskrit

This paper aims to provide some preliminary findings on the so-called āmreḍita compounds by considering evidence from Vedic Prose, here represented by the Brāhmaṇas. So far studies have focused on āmreḍitas in the R̥ gveda, while a systematic investigation of those in the later Vedic Prose language has not been undertaken yet. Vedic Prose exhibits the emergence of new forms, almost entirely absent in earlier texts but taught in the Aṣṭādhyāyī. I will focus on verbal āmreḍitas, in particular on those formed with imperatives and gerunds. According to the Indian grammarians, verbal āmreḍitas encode the same values as the intensive category, i.e., kriyāsamabhihāra “repetitious or intense action” and nitya (= abhīkṣṇya) “reiteration”. The equivalence in meaning between repeated verbal forms and intensive verbs – already identified by Pāṇini and his commentators (cf. Kāśikā ad A 3.4.2; Kāśikā ad A 8.1.4) – explains why verbal āmreḍitas are present in Vedic Prose. Indeed, I will show that the first cases of verbal āmreḍitas are found in Vedic Prose when the intensive category was recessive.

La formazione dei suffissi andronimici greci: percorsi semantici e dinamiche del mutamento

L'articolo ricostruisce i percorsi storici e i principi semantici che hanno guidato la formazione dei suffissi andronimici -αινα e -ίνα nel dominio linguistico greco. La storia e la configurazione degli assetti funzionali dei due suffissi in greco illustrano due diversi percorsi di formazione ed esemplificano altrettanti schemi e dinamiche del mutamento – da un lato la riduzione, dall’altro lato l’istituzione di domini funzionali – le cui direzioni sono orientate in senso opposto e procedono in maniera inversa, secondo un principio più generale, il cui nucleo concettuale è condensato, ad esempio, in Lazzeroni (2005). In base a tale principio, in una sequenza di categorie organizzate gerarchicamente attorno a un prototipo (nel nostro caso le classi di nomi con grado massimo di animatezza), la cancellazione di forme e funzioni procede dalla periferia al centro, mentre, invece, la costituzione di forme e funzioni procede dal centro alla periferia.

Revisión y actualización de algunos dendrónimos indoeuropeos

En este artículo realizamos una aproximación a la dendronimia indoeuropea. La investigación sobre este ámbito de estudio, descuidado en los últimos años, es el principal objetivo de este trabajo, así como la actualización y revisión de ciertos étimos incluidos en la Enciclopedia de Cultura Indoeuropea de Mallory y Adams (1997). La más reciente documentación y el mayor conocimiento en la actualidad sobre lenguas indoeuropeas cuyo estudio era minoritario antaño, como el celtibérico, nos permitirá revisar, actualizar las entradas correspondientes y proporcionar nuevos paralelos lingüísticos.

A refinement of the definition of Manner and its expression through Italian indefinites

The aim of this paper is to study how Manner is coded in Italian through expressions other than the verb, specifically investigating expressions containing the paucal indefinites niente (“nothing”), qualcosina (“something.DIM.”), poc-/po’ (“a few”, “a little”), certo (“a certain”) and the pattern N/V [da N/V] (“N/V[da.PREP. N/V]”), such as: come niente (“in an effortless way”), mangiamo qualcosina (“let’s eat together spending some time leisurely”) scrive un po’ (“s/he writes without commitment”), certi sguardi (“certain peculiar looks”), sguardi da far paura (“scary looks”). This work complements the vast literature on the subject, mainly focused on manner of motion verbs. For this purpose, 6000 occurrences were extracted and analysed using a corpus-based and corpus-driven approach. The hypothesis is that paucal indefinite items semantically change along a path of the type Quantity > Quality > Manner. The results substantiate this hypothesis and help refine the definition of Manner from an onomasiological point of view.
